Yuki Tsunoda Set to Start Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from Pit Lane Following Qualifying Crash

Yuki Tsunoda will begin the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix from the pit lane after a significant accident during qualifying. The Red Bull Racing driver lost control of his RB21 at the fast Villeneuve chicane, crashing into the inside wall and causing his car to barrel roll. Fortunately, Tsunoda emerged uninjured and was subsequently cleared by medical personnel.

Due to the extensive damage to his car, Red Bull completed a spare chassis rebuild. Tsunoda also faces a fresh Honda power unit deployment—his third for the season—along with other component changes that exceed parc ferme regulations. Notably, the penalties related to battery and control electronics will not affect his starting position, as they align with his pit lane start.

Jo Bauer, the FIA’s technical delegate, confirmed that the rebuild utilized various components of different specifications, necessitating Tsunoda’s pit lane start as per Article 40.9 of the 2025 Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Reflecting on his crash, Tsunoda expressed frustration regarding his error: “I’m just really stupid… pushing like that,” he stated, noting that he had received a significant upgrade package identical to teammate Max Verstappen’s. “It was just very unnecessary to push that hard in the early stages,” Tsunoda concluded.
