Haas F1 Team Seeks FIA Clarity Following Controversial Qualifying Decision
The Haas F1 Team has formally requested written clarification from the FIA after Oliver Bearman was disqualified from the first qualifying session of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Despite posting a lap time that appeared to securely place him into Q2, Bearman’s efforts were invalidated following a red flag caused by Franco Colapinto’s crash.
The controversy arose when Bearman crossed the finish line at 16:32:20.9 seconds, just before the red flag was displayed at 16:32:17.6 seconds. Haas contends that Bearman’s lap should have been counted, arguing he completed it before the flag was shown. This prompted a debate during the session’s interruption, as Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto replaced Bearman in the pit lane.
In a statement released by Haas, the team stated, "After discussions with the FIA, we have requested further clarification on the decision-making regarding Ollie Bearman’s final Q1 lap." The team is seeking to understand what measures will be implemented to prevent similar occurrences in future sessions.
Subsequently, the FIA defended its actions, asserting the validity of their ruling. “The overriding objective was to determine whether Bearman had completed the lap before or after the red flag,” said an FIA spokesperson.
Bearman expressed his dissatisfaction, labeling the decision “unfair.” He emphasized that visual evidence indicated no red flag was displayed as he crossed the line. "I believe it’s totally unfair to have [the lap] deleted," he added, suggesting that even if the ruling was erroneous, the FIA may be reluctant to reverse it.
The situation highlights ongoing concerns about the consistency and clarity of decision-making in Formula 1 qualifying procedures. Haas awaits a detailed response from the FIA as they prepare to analyze the implications of this incident.
