Verstappen Backs McLaren’s Title Battle Ahead of Qatar Grand Prix
Max Verstappen commended McLaren’s strategy of allowing its drivers to compete freely for the title as the Formula 1 season approaches its climax at the Qatar Grand Prix. As Lando Norris leads the championship standings, a 24-point margin over both Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri puts the title within his grasp. Norris can clinch the championship by either outscoring both drivers by two points or winning the race while finishing ahead of Piastri.
Piastri confirmed that discussions about team orders have taken place but stated he remains in contention for the title and will not assist Norris at this stage. Verstappen supported this decision, emphasizing the importance of competition among the drivers. “It’s perfect, I think,” Verstappen remarked. “You can’t do a better job than allowing them to race.”
The Red Bull driver acknowledged the competitive spirit required in the sport, suggesting that drivers must strive for victory regardless of their standings: “If you’re a real winner and a racer as a driver, then you go for it, even if you’re behind.”
Verstappen, addressing the media for the first time since McLaren’s disqualification in Las Vegas, expressed that the team’s disqualification tightened his championship chances from a 42-point deficit to 24 points. He stated, “A lot still needs to go right,” while maintaining that Red Bull’s approach remains unchanged.
Reflecting on McLaren’s disqualification, Verstappen said, “When it’s too low, it’s too low,” underscoring the challenges teams face in compliance with regulations. He acknowledged the reduced gap as a positive development but cautioned that success also requires a degree of fortune. “Even if you win everything, you still need a bit of luck,” he noted.
As the season edges toward its conclusion, Verstappen reaffirmed Red Bull’s commitment to pursuing full performance. “For us, nothing changes. We go all in. We have nothing to lose,” he concluded.
