Verstappen Acknowledges McLaren’s Dominance Despite Upcoming Upgrades

Miami, FL — Max Verstappen has tempered expectations for Red Bull Racing’s performance as the team prepares upgrades for their 2025 Formula 1 car. Following a disappointing Miami Grand Prix where he finished 40 seconds behind McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Verstappen pointed out the significant challenge Red Bull faces in closing the performance gap.

Despite securing pole position, Verstappen’s race pace faltered, leading to a stark contrast in performance against McLaren. "The race pace was depressing for everyone except McLaren. No one was even in the same league there," Verstappen stated, highlighting a major concern for the team.

Red Bull will introduce a new floor for Verstappen’s RB25, while teammate Yuki Tsunoda will receive the same updates for the upcoming Imola race this weekend. However, Verstappen insists the changes will yield only incremental improvements. "I don’t expect to suddenly close the gap to McLaren," he remarked, indicating that previous updates have only provided "a little step forward."

Further developments are anticipated ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, coinciding with a new technical directive aimed at reducing flexibility in front wings, a characteristic that has reportedly benefitted McLaren’s performance. However, Verstappen expressed skepticism about the impact of the directive, stating, "That will not give you eight tenths to a second… the gap was large at times in Miami."

The underlying issue for Red Bull continues to be understanding McLaren’s ability to manage rear tire degradation effectively in high-pressure races. "It’s a bit impossible to know until we figure it out," Verstappen concluded, acknowledging the complexity involved and that improvements might be track-specific.

As teams gear up for the next race, Red Bull’s capacity to adapt and harness new upgrades will be crucial in their quest to regain competitiveness against a formidable McLaren lineup.
