Victor Martins Set for F1 Debut with Williams at Spanish GP

Barcelona, Spain — Williams Racing announced that junior driver Victor Martins will partake in his first official Formula 1 practice session this Friday at the Spanish Grand Prix. Martins, who will drive the FW47 originally piloted by Alexander Albon, is part of a regulation that mandates each team to field a rookie in at least two practice sessions throughout the season.

Martins expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “I’m super happy to be taking the wheel of the FW47 for the first time in Barcelona! It will be an incredible experience to drive for the team. I’m working hard to prepare as much as possible to maximize my time in the car and make it a valuable session for myself and the team.”

Williams’ sporting director, Sven Smeets, commented on Martins’ development, noting, “We’re proud that Victor will be participating in his first Formula 1 session with Williams Racing in Barcelona. This session is an important step forward in his career as part of the Academy.”

Martins officially joined the Williams Academy on March 31, transitioning from two stints in the Alpine Academy. The 23-year-old Frenchman is currently competing in his third season of Formula 2 with ART Grand Prix, where he has faced challenges converting pace into results, currently sitting eighth in the standings, 37 points behind leader Luke Browning.

The upcoming session follows a tumultuous period for Martins, including missed opportunities in recent races, notably a cancelled Melbourne feature race where he was set to start from pole, and involvement in a significant incident during the Monaco Grand Prix.

As the F1 calendar progresses, Martins’ performance in this practice session will be closely watched, reflecting not only his potential but also Williams’ commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
