Vowles Endorses Sainz Sr. for FIA Presidency

Williams F1 Team Principal James Vowles has expressed support for Carlos Sainz Sr.’s potential bid for the FIA presidency, stating the two-time World Rally Champion would be a strong candidate.

Sainz Sr., the father of current Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr., is considering challenging incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem, as reported by Autosport. Critics suggest Sainz Sr.’s candidacy could pose a conflict of interest; however, he has rebuffed these claims, asserting his commitment to impartiality.

Vowles emphasized that Sainz Sr.’s extensive experience—spanning over 40 years in motorsport—positions him well for the role. “He has a logical view on how the sport is constructed and can contribute significantly,” Vowles noted during a media briefing. He assured that if elected, Sainz Sr.’s new responsibilities would not hinder his son’s racing career, as the elder Sainz respects his son’s autonomy.

Sainz’s multifaceted exposure to various forms of motorsport was also highlighted by Vowles. This background includes leadership experiences in Spanish motorsport organizations, suggesting that his transition to FIA president may not be as significant as perceived.

As Sainz Sr. deliberates over his candidacy in the coming weeks, Vowles remains confident in his potential impact on the sport’s governance.

"It’s up to him to decide whether or not it’s the direction he really wants to take," concluded Vowles.
