George Russell Affirms Commitment to Mercedes Amid Speculation
George Russell has firmly indicated that he intends to remain with Mercedes beyond 2026, describing the likelihood of leaving as "exceptionally low." The British driver, who has yet to sign a new contract, addressed growing speculation following comments made during the recent Austrian Grand Prix regarding team principal Toto Wolff’s discussions with Max Verstappen’s management.
Verstappen, currently contracted with Red Bull until 2028, has performance-related escape clauses that may allow for a shift as soon as next year. Nevertheless, Russell asserted confidence in his long-term prospects with Mercedes, stating, “I want to continue with Mercedes into the future… the likelihood I’m not at Mercedes next year, I think, is exceptionally low.”
Russell, along with rookie teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has yet to have confirmed status for 2026, but both are considered vital to the team’s future. He remarked, “Every team has two seats available… I don’t take that personally.” Russell expressed that the increasing rumors around driver movements reflect the normalcy of F1 dynamics and are not a cause for concern.
He reiterated his commitment to Mercedes, stating, “I am loyal to Mercedes… there hasn’t been a lack of interest… but I’ve been focused on my side.” Russell emphasized that future negotiations would be managed through Mercedes, where he feels his performance merits confidence.
Wolff hinted at a potential resolution concerning contract statuses around the summer break, although Russell sought to temper expectations, noting, “There’s not really any deadline in place.” He remains optimistic about Mercedes’ capabilities as the team navigates upcoming regulatory changes for 2026, advocating for continuity: “I feel we’re performing at the racetrack at a very high level… consistency gives you your best shot.”
In light of the evolving landscape, Russell’s stance suggests a firm belief in Mercedes’ strategic direction, further consolidating his position within the team as they approach a pivotal season.
