Bortoleto’s Crash Highlights Safety Standards in F1 at Sao Paulo GP
Interlagos, Sao Paulo — Sauber Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley lauded Formula 1’s stringent safety protocols following a harrowing crash involving Gabriel Bortoleto during the Sprint event at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Bortoleto lost control while attempting an overtake on Alex Albon entering Turn 1 on the final lap, colliding with the concrete wall before being launched back into an outer barrier at high speed. The incident, which occurred under slick tire conditions on a damp track, resulted in significant damage to the car, yet Bortoleto emerged uninjured and was cleared by medical personnel.
Wheatley provided an update, stating, “I’ve spoken to the manager of the medical center, and it sounds like he’s absolutely fine, no injuries at all.” He praised the FIA’s efforts to ensure driver safety, noting that “a crash of that magnitude, for the driver to be fine and get out, just highlights the impressive safety standards of Formula 1.”
While Wheatley refrained from speculating on the cause of the crash—calling it “a little bit soon to understand”—he acknowledged its severity, referring to it as “one of the biggest crashes I’ve seen for a while.”
Given the tight schedule, it remains uncertain whether Sauber can prepare a car for Bortoleto in time for qualifying. “We haven’t established that yet,” Wheatley said, emphasizing the urgency of building a new car. “There’s no time to mess around with the one that we have at the moment.”
In a related incident, teammate Nico Hulkenberg also experienced a crash during the Sprint but managed to return to the track after a red flag. Wheatley noted that despite the setbacks, valuable data was gleaned: “Nico ended up having to start from the back of the grid – at least we got the car repaired and we got a bit more information.”
As the team awaits further developments, Bortoleto’s health and potential return to the track remain critical to Sauber’s qualifying strategy.
