Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix, Recovery in Spotlight Ahead of Canadian Race
Barcelona, Spain – Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll has officially withdrawn from the Spanish Grand Prix due to recurring issues related to a prior cycling injury. Stroll’s decision, announced shortly before the race, follows complications from wrist injuries sustained in a bike accident ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season.
The Canadian driver was sidelined after struggling with hand and wrist pain for the past six weeks, which his medical team attributes to complications from surgery he underwent last year. Despite qualifying in 14th position, Stroll was advised against racing by his medical consultant. An Aston Martin statement confirmed that he will undergo a procedure to address these issues before his recovery begins.
As the countdown begins to the Canadian Grand Prix, concerns arise regarding Stroll’s availability. Team principal Mike Krack expressed optimism, stating, “Plan A is to have Lance in the car” for his home race. However, the team is evaluating alternatives should Stroll be unable to resume driving in time.
Two reserve drivers, Stoffel Vandoorne and Felipe Drugovich, are on Aston Martin’s roster. However, Vandoorne is confirmed to race for Peugeot at the Le Mans WEC event scheduled for the same weekend as the Canadian GP. Drugovich, currently committed to Cadillac for Le Mans, indicated a willingness to prioritize an F1 debut if presented with the opportunity.
“If the situation arises, my priority has always been Formula 1,” Drugovich stated, hinting at a potential conflict between his commitments.
With both primary options constrained, Aston Martin could consider F2 driver Jak Crawford or F1 Academy competitor Tina Hausmann; however, neither holds the necessary FIA superlicense to compete in F1. This situation potentially necessitates Aston Martin reaching out to other teams for reserve drivers, with Mercedes-powered teams being a viable option.
Valtteri Bottas, who previously raced in Formula 1 with 10 victories to his name, is seen as a strong candidate if required. Bottas, who expressed a desire to return to F1, could offer Aston Martin the seasoned experience they need on short notice.
As recovery plans for Stroll unfold, the motorsport community watches closely, eager for updates on both his condition and the team’s strategic response in the lead-up to the Canadian Grand Prix.
