Verstappen at Risk of Race Ban Following Penalty
Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, is now one penalty point away from a potential race ban following a collision with George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix. Verstappen incurred a 10-second penalty and received three penalty points on his superlicence for the incident, which occurred in the race’s closing laps. He has accumulated 11 out of the 12 points needed for a ban within a 12-month window.
The Dutch driver earned his first two points following a clash with Lando Norris in the Austrian Grand Prix on June 30 last year. Even after those points expire this year, he will still be three points away from suspension, with the two points from the Mexican GP remaining until late October.
Verstappen must avoid further penalties for at least the next two races, as speculation grows regarding possible replacements should he be sidelined.
Contenders to Replace Verstappen
-
Isack Hadjar
- The French rookie has shown significant promise, finishing in the points in five of the nine races this season and qualifying fifth in Monaco, a feat last achieved by Lewis Hamilton as a rookie. Hadjar, who has adapted quickly after an earlier mishap, would have the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities in a one-off race should Verstappen be banned.
-
Liam Lawson
- The New Zealander had a challenging stint earlier this season with Red Bull, leading to his demotion. However, Lawson’s knowledge from that experience could be crucial. He recently secured points in Monaco and demonstrated his team player mentality by aiding Hadjar during the race.
-
Ayumu Iwasa
- Currently competing in Super Formula, Iwasa has had a solid start, finishing on the podium in three of five rounds. He has previously participated in F1 practice sessions and could be positioned to step into the Racing Bulls seat if required.
-
Arvid Lindblad
- With notable performances in Formula 2, including wins in Saudi Arabia and Spain, Lindblad has been in the Red Bull junior program for four years. However, he would require special clearance to compete in F1 before his 18th birthday.
-
Daniel Ricciardo
- A feasible yet unlikely option, Ricciardo has a strong historic connection with Red Bull and could rejoin for a one-off race. Nonetheless, he has distanced himself from the sport since his exit from AlphaTauri.
- Sergio Perez
- Despite poor performance in his last season alongside Verstappen, Perez remains a familiar figure within the Red Bull setup. With speculation regarding his future, he might be eager to return.
As Verstappen navigates his precarious position, the coming races will be pivotal for both him and Red Bull Racing.
