Max Verstappen Completes Successful GT3 Test at Nürburgring
Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, recently participated in a GT3 testing session at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife, under the alias "Franz Hermann." Driving the Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3, typically utilized in DTM, Verstappen aimed to support his team, whose driver Thierry Vermeulen is also his protégé.
Reports indicate that Verstappen was immediately competitive, confirming he surpassed the previous NLS GT3 lap record of 7m49.578s set by Christian Krognes. "I was faster than the NLS GT3 lap record… but I’m not there to show that I can break a lap record," he stated, emphasizing his focus on gaining experience rather than making headlines.
The testing session was part of Emil Frey Racing’s preparation for a potential future entry into the prestigious Nürburgring 24 Hours. Verstappen noted the ideal weather conditions on the day, stating, "We were lucky… it was really nice and sunny."
To compete at Nürburgring, Verstappen must secure a DMSB Permit, requiring him to progress through lower racing categories unless granted an exemption. He logged "thousands" of simulator laps before the real-life test, which aided his familiarity with the track. "For me, when I got there in real life, it was more knowing the grip level of the new tarmac," he explained.
Although Formula 1 provides him with greater thrills, Verstappen expressed enjoyment in testing GT3 machinery: “It was fun, and I had a good time.”
Verstappen’s commitment to improving his craft underscores his dedication to motorsports, as he seeks to broaden his racing repertoire while simultaneously preparing for future endurance challenges.
