Red Bull Formula 1 Team Appoints Laurent Mekies as New Team Principal
Laurent Mekies, born on April 28, 1977, in Tours, France, has been named as only the second team principal in Red Bull Racing’s history, succeeding Christian Horner, who exited the team abruptly today amid the ongoing season. Mekies takes the helm at a pivotal time for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, which has been a dominant force in Formula 1 since its entry in 2005.
Mekies boasts over 25 years in motorsport, beginning his career with Asiatech in Formula 3 before advancing to Formula 1 with Arrows and Minardi, where he served as race engineer for notable drivers such as Mark Webber. In 2006, following Red Bull’s acquisition of Toro Rosso, he was promoted to chief engineer and held that position for nearly a decade, contributing significantly to the team’s technical development.
After a brief departure from race competition, Mekies joined the FIA in 2014, where he served as Safety Director and Deputy Race Director. He was instrumental in implementing critical safety regulations, including the introduction of the Halo device, before returning to the grid as Ferrari’s Sporting Director and eventually Deputy Team Principal.
Mekies’ leadership abilities were evident during his tenure at Ferrari, where he managed diverse responsibilities within the team. His appointment marks a significant challenge, as Red Bull aims to maintain its competitive edge while undergoing substantial changes, including the development of a new wind tunnel and its inaugural in-house power unit in conjunction with Ford.
Frederic Vasseur, reflecting on Mekies’ capabilities, noted, “He has a very good understanding of the business, having started as an engineer and then worked at the FIA. In this kind of position, you need someone with a full understanding of the company.”
As Mekies steps into this critical role, he faces not only the legacy of the Horner era but also rising internal tensions that threaten the team’s cohesiveness, including speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future with Red Bull.
