Lance Stroll Withdraws from Spanish Grand Prix Due to Injury

Aston Martin F1 driver Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the Spanish Grand Prix, citing pain in his hand and wrist as residual effects from a medical procedure following a cycling accident at the start of the 2023 season. Stroll’s announcement came too late for a replacement, as the team had already completed its qualifying session where he qualified 14th.

The FIA’s sporting regulations restrict driver substitutions during a traditional Grand Prix weekend. According to Article 32.1, teams can utilize a maximum of four drivers per season, but any changes after qualifying require prior approval from race stewards. Article 32.2 specifies that driver changes must be made before the qualifying session in regular events, disqualifying any options for Aston Martin after Stroll’s late announcement.

Aston Martin’s reserve driver, 2022 F2 champion Felipe Drugovich, as well as Mercedes’ reserve Valtteri Bottas, are both options, but logistical constraints and regulatory implications prevented a substitution this weekend.

A team statement confirmed, "Over the past six weeks, Lance has experienced ongoing pain which his medical consultant believes is related to the procedure he underwent earlier this year." This context suggests that any claim for a “force majeure” replacement for the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix may face scrutiny unless Stroll’s condition worsens.

The team will monitor his recovery closely ahead of future races.
