Piastri’s Penalty Overshadowed by McLaren’s 1-2 Finish at British GP

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri experienced a contentious 10-second penalty during the Formula 1 British Grand Prix, which he argued cost him the victory. Team principal Andrea Stella labeled the decision by the stewards as "very harsh," emphasizing that numerous factors were overlooked.

The incident occurred on lap 21 during a safety car restart when Piastri braked abruptly on the Hangar Straight as the lights turned off. This action forced Max Verstappen, who was behind him, to take evasive action. The stewards deemed Piastri’s braking erratic, citing a drop in speed from 218 kph to 52 kph, and ruled it a breach of Article 55.15 of the FIA Sporting Regulations.

Stella outlined three key mitigating circumstances: the late safety car call, the resulting loss of tire and brake temperature, and the potential impact of Verstappen’s radio comments, which may have unnecessarily amplified the situation. "We’d like to see if other competitors made the situation look worse than what it is," Stella remarked.

Verstappen himself described the penalty as "extreme," suggesting a level of consensus on its severity among top drivers.

Despite the controversy, McLaren secured a 1-2 finish, with Lando Norris claiming victory. Stella announced that while the team would not contest the penalty, they seek to discuss the incident further with the FIA for clarity going forward.

"We will see if there’s anything to learn on our side,” Stella concluded, signaling a focus on future races and potential adjustments in strategy.
