Vasseur Under Pressure: Wolff Advocates for More Time
Austrian Grand Prix, 2025 — Mercedes F1 chief Toto Wolff has come to the defense of Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur amid mounting criticism from the Italian fanbase and media. Vasseur, now in his third season, faces scrutiny for the Scuderia’s inability to secure a Grand Prix win this year, with Monaco being their only serious challenge so far.
Despite these challenges, Ferrari remains competitive, striving to defend its second position in the constructors’ championship. Speculations regarding Vasseur’s future intensified following reports in Italian media suggesting management changes at Maranello, claims firmly denied by Vasseur and his drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.
Wolff emphasized the importance of patience for team leaders, citing historical precedents. “In Formula 1, you can’t buy time,” he remarked. “We’ve seen teams like Ferrari take years to achieve success. Jean Todt’s journey at Ferrari from 1993 to their first championship in 2000 took eight years.”
Vasseur, who succeeded Mattia Binotto prior to the 2023 season, is in the process of overhauling Ferrari, which includes recent key hires like Loic Serra from Mercedes. Wolff encouraged the Ferrari management and fans to allow Vasseur the necessary space and time for his vision to materialize.
“Leave him the space. Let him structure an organization that isn’t going to grip from day one,” Wolff urged. “He’s under immense scrutiny, akin to managing Italy’s national football team.”
Wolff expressed deep respect for Vasseur, stating, “If I wasn’t here, I would take Fred in a heartbeat.” He noted Vasseur’s straight-talking style and reliability in navigating the pressures inherent in Ferrari’s storied history.
As Ferrari continues its season, the call for stability at the helm is clear: give Vasseur the confidence and time to steer the iconic team forward.
