Mercedes Nearing Contract Extension with George Russell After Singapore Victory

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that negotiations for a new contract with George Russell are progressing, following his impressive win at the Singapore Grand Prix. Russell, who is out of contract at the season’s end, secured his second victory of the year, reinforcing his position within the team as both a talented driver and a strategic competitor.

Wolff commended Russell’s recent performances, highlighting his evolution into a driver capable of commanding races. “We’ve seen George in the past with these moments [of mistakes], but not recently,” Wolff stated. “He was in control of the race, managing the pace and maintaining an advantage over Max Verstappen.”

Russell’s victory was a result of a strong Mercedes showing across the weekend, an outcome that surprised many, including Wolff. He remarked, “You know with these cars, they are just a surprise box,” referencing the unpredictable nature of the performance variability seen in recent races among top teams, including McLaren and Ferrari.

Wolff elaborated on the challenges teams face with car setups: “The margins are so small in having the car in the right aerodynamic window… It doesn’t always correlate with what you see in the virtual world.”

As talks for Russell’s contract continue, Wolff noted, “Good things take a while. It’s about the detail and it’s not about the big topics.” This indicates both parties are focused on ensuring a strategic alignment as they plan for the future, potentially extending Russell’s tenure through 2026.
