Mercedes Aims for Driver Line-Up Clarity Before 2026 Season
WOLFGANG, Austria – Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is targeting a determination on the team’s driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season before the summer break. With George Russell and rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli yet to secure contracts for next year, Wolff emphasized the need for clarity ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Wolff’s interest in reigning world champion Max Verstappen was evident during discussions, although he later stated the likelihood of signing the Red Bull driver is "very little." Despite this, Wolff has not definitively committed to Russell and Antonelli as the future drivers, sparking speculation about exploring other options ahead of new regulations.
Following the Austrian Grand Prix, where Russell finished fifth and Antonelli retired after a collision with Verstappen on the opening lap, Wolff articulated the urgency of finalizing driver decisions. “You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process… Everybody needs to understand the way forward,” he remarked.
Wolff aims to reach a conclusion between the Hungarian GP in August and the subsequent Dutch GP, emphasizing the importance of respect and transparency in the decision-making timeline. He noted, “There are lots of discussions around, and at a certain stage…we need to know.”
As the clock ticks down to the summer break, the motorsport community watches closely as Mercedes navigates its driver strategy, balancing talent development with competitive aspirations.
