Toto Wolff Discusses Lewis Hamilton’s Transition to Ferrari
In a recent interview on the Bloomberg Hot Pursuit podcast, Mercedes CEO and team principal Toto Wolff addressed the implications of Lewis Hamilton’s departure from the team, a move announced ahead of the 2025 season. Hamilton’s 12-year tenure at Mercedes yielded six world championships, marking the longest driver-team relationship in Formula 1 history.
Despite Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari, where he is set to partner Charles Leclerc, Wolff expressed his commitment to their enduring friendship. “You always have to miss a person like Lewis Hamilton… We’ve given our word to each other that we will stay close friends,” Wolff stated. He emphasized the challenges of replacing a driver with Hamilton’s caliber, citing his extensive experience and historical performance.
Currently, Hamilton sits sixth in the drivers’ standings with 79 points, facing a tough adjustment to Ferrari’s machinery. Wolff defended Hamilton’s abilities amid struggles, reinforcing that “you don’t unlearn driving that quickly.” He noted Hamilton’s adaptation process, stating, “Just by changing teams, suddenly you don’t lose your skills… It takes time to adapt to a new engineering team and car dynamics.”
Moreover, Wolff highlighted a pattern in Hamilton’s history of stronger performance in the latter half of seasons, assuring that his skills should not be underestimated. "Don’t ever write Lewis Hamilton off," Wolff concluded, reinforcing his belief in the British driver’s ongoing potential.
