Tsunoda’s Qualifying Misstep at Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

In a disappointing turn of events for Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese driver crashed during qualifying for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, resulting in a last-place start for Sunday’s race. The incident occurred in Q1 as Tsunoda lost control of his RB21, making heavy contact with the inside wall.

Following precautionary checks at the medical center, Tsunoda accepted responsibility for the crash, calling it “unnecessary” and “stupid.” He remarked, “I’m just really stupid… pushing like that. It’s very hard and we made a lot of changes to the car. Pushing that hard without understanding enough about the car… just very unnecessary.”

This crash marks Tsunoda’s first Q1 incident in four years, recalling his similar mishap at the same venue during the 2021 event. Post-accident, he expressed feelings of shame, disappointment, and frustration, acknowledging the significant damage to his car and the subsequent burden on his mechanics to ensure the RB21 is race-ready by tomorrow.

In contrast, Tsunoda’s teammate, Max Verstappen, qualified second, trailing only behind Oscar Piastri of McLaren, showcasing a stark difference in fortunes for the Red Bull Racing team.

As the team prepares for crucial repairs, Tsunoda emphasized the importance of learning from the incident to avoid similar mistakes in the future.
