Allmendinger Takes First Steps in Acura ARX-06 Ahead of 24 Hours of Daytona
Daytona Beach, FL – AJ Allmendinger, winner of the 2012 Rolex 24 At Daytona, returned to the prototype racing scene at the IMSA Sanctioned Test on Friday, piloting Meyer Shank Racing’s Acura ARX-06. This marks Allmendinger’s first opportunities in an IMSA top-tier prototype since 2021.
During the morning session, Allmendinger completed 15 laps, reacquainting himself with the unique dynamics of high-performance sports car racing. “I was on old tires, so that was part of it, but it was definitely tricky to drive,” Allmendinger noted. “I’m just trying to learn… especially the braking—finding the threshold is crucial.”
Teamed with seasoned drivers Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun, and Scott Dixon, Allmendinger acknowledged the learning curve he faces in adapting from NASCAR’s Cup Series to the advanced GTP class. “It’s been so long since the DPi, I don’t even remember what it felt like… It’s a proper race car,” he remarked, emphasizing the stark differences in handling and braking between disciplines.
The physical demands of the ARX-06 also presented challenges, as Allmendinger pointed out, “The steering’s so much heavier right away. It’s hard to turn the steering wheel.” He emphasized the importance of adjusting to the car’s grip and managing physical endurance over stints.
Aiming to contribute effectively as a fourth driver in the No. 60 Acura, Allmendinger expressed both confidence in his teammates and personal pressure to perform. “I have all the confidence in them. It’s me trying to get the confidence back up,” he stated, adding that he aspires to return the car in a competitive state.
At nearly 44 years old, Allmendinger remains focused on his legacy with team owner Michael Shank, saying, “I just don’t want to let you down. Ain’t gonna happen, bud – you never have. We want you.”
As the team prepares for the Roar Before the 24 and the upcoming race, Allmendinger is committed to maximizing his role, stating, “I just want to hold my weight.”
With experience and determination, Allmendinger is set for his 16th 24-hour race, aiming for a solid performance in the dynamic and competitive environment at Daytona.
