Logan Sargeant Returns to Prototype Racing with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports

IMSA SportsCar Championship – Former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant is set to make an unexpected return to prototype racing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship. Just six months after parting ways with IDEC Sport Racing and Hyundai’s Genesis team, the 24-year-old American is joining PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports for the final two endurance races of the season.

Sargeant will pilot the #52 Oreca 07-Gibson, participating in the six-hour race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 21, followed by the ten-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on October 11.

This comeback contradicts IDEC Sport Racing’s previous announcement suggesting Sargeant would step away from racing to focus on other interests. His recent signing with management group Oliver Gavin further indicates a concerted effort to rejuvenate his racing career.

At PR1 Mathiasen, Sargeant will team with former IndyCar driver Benjamin Pedersen and Bronze-rated driver Naveen Rao.

"I’m super excited to be jumping back into a car for the last two LMP2 races in IMSA with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports," Sargeant stated. "It’s a great opportunity to drive at two special tracks and help push for good results with my teammates."

Team principal Bobby Oergel expressed enthusiasm for Sargeant’s return, emphasizing the value of his experience and speed: "We really want to welcome him into our team in a smooth and easy fashion. The opportunity to do some testing ahead of the Indy event should do just that."

Sargeant’s track record includes a world karting title, podium finishes in FIA Formula 3, and a fourth-place finish in FIA Formula 2, which secured him an F1 seat with Williams in 2023. Notably, he became the first American in 30 years to score a championship point in F1 during the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, although he was subsequently replaced after the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.

Sargeant’s brief foray into IMSA may signal the start of a promising new chapter in his racing career.
