Genesis GMR-001 LMDh Livery Unveiled at New York International Auto Show
New York, NY — Genesis has officially revealed the livery for its upcoming World Endurance Championship (WEC) entry, the GMR-001 LMDh, at this week’s New York International Auto Show. This marks a significant step for the South Korean manufacturer ahead of its full competition debut next year.
The livery showcased on the full-scale model is a vibrant evolution from the earlier 50% model revealed during the LMDh program launch in Dubai last December, moving from a predominantly black color scheme to a more prominent use of its signature orange.
Technical Insights and Developments
Designed by Luc Donckerwolke, chief creative officer at Genesis Design Europe, the GMR-001 features elements inspired by the brand’s road cars, including the distinctive "two-line" lighting. The car’s aerodynamic efficiency is bolstered by a newly integrated flat underbody plate, aimed at enhancing thermal performance.
The GMR-001 will be powered by a twin-turbo V8, utilizing technology stemming from the inline four-cylinder engine of the Hyundai i20 N Rally 1. This engine, which successfully fired up on the dyno in February, is expected to share about 60% of its components with the WRC variant. Technical director François-Xavier Demaison noted that this approach was essential given the tight timeline for entering the prototype racing arena.
Race Experience and Future Plans
In preparation for its WEC debut, Genesis Magma Racing is currently competing in the European Le Mans Series with an LMP2 entry, where it secured victory in the opening round—the 4 Hours of Barcelona. The team has also confirmed the signings of notable drivers Andre Lotterer and Pipo Derani for its 2026 WEC campaign, alongside plans to expand into the IMSA SportsCar Championship the following year.
Team principal Cyril Abiteboul characterized the recent engine tests as the project’s "first heartbeat," highlighting their commitment to both development and competitive readiness for the LMDh series. The next significant test for the GMR-001 engine is scheduled for the summer.
As Genesis continues its journey in endurance racing, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this innovative contender performs on the track.
