IMSA Petit Le Mans: Max Esterson Shines Amidst Challenges
In a surprising turn at IMSA’s Petit Le Mans, Max Esterson made a notable debut in the No. 85 JDC Miller MotorSports Porsche 963, a customer LMDh hypercar, that highlighted both his potential and the challenges facing the team. Despite finishing laps down after a collision with the No. 25 BMW at Turn 10, Esterson showcased impressive early performance, leapfrogging into the top four and completing three consecutive stints on a single set of tires, all while matching the pace of experienced factory drivers.
“We’re probably not in a much more difficult audition,” remarked Esterson, reflecting on his transition from Formula 2 to endurance racing at one of the most challenging circuits in the U.S. The 23-year-old pilot acknowledged the complexities of adapting to a new car, especially in the night conditions of Road Atlanta.
Despite the JDC Miller team’s limited resources compared to factory squads, Esterson’s performance was striking. His fastest lap was only 0.183 seconds off the car’s best by 2016 Le Mans winner Neel Jani. Notably, Esterson’s average lap time was superior to many experienced drivers, including Formula E champion Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche factory regular Nico Mueller.
“The response to my performance has been really good,” Esterson stated, underlining his surprising ascent in performance despite a challenging recent stint in Formula 2. “Running in the top five on pace was very good and a bonus for most people.”
Esterson qualified 12th but rebounded strongly during the race. He noted that mastering intricate aspects like lapped traffic and tire management added to the complexity of his debut. Reflecting on the event, he acknowledged his racecraft but hinted at needing to refine some overtaking maneuvers.
