IMSA Petit Le Mans: Chaos and Triumph at Road Atlanta
Road Atlanta, October 7, 2023 — In a gripping conclusion to the IMSA SportsCar Championship, Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet officially secured their titles despite a chaotic 10-hour Petit Le Mans race. The Porsche Penske Motorsport duo entered the race with a substantial points lead, underlining their status as frontrunners throughout the season.
Race day unfolded dramatically for Campbell, who opted to walk two miles to the track after heavy traffic delayed their arrival. “I didn’t want to be in too much of a rush,” he stated. Unfortunately, luck was fickle; teammate Julien Andlauer fell ill, necessitating a last-minute reshuffle. Laurens Vanthoor, originally slated to handle the #7 entry, stepped in to drive #6 alongside Campbell and Jaminet, leading to a high-stress start for the team.
Vanthoor’s dual duties began swiftly, managing driving times across both cars while the strategy unfolded amid five safety cars. Despite starting less competitively, the #6 Porsche gained momentum as Campbell pitted shortly before the fifth yellow flag, enabling Jaminet to lead the race upon the restart.
As race temperatures plummeted, the Porsche showcased its prowess, consistently holding a top position throughout the night. “We knew our car would come alive a bit more in the night,” Campbell explained. However, the team’s cautious strategy meant they let victory slip out of reach; Jaminet ultimately ceded position late, finishing fourth after a late race shake-up involving Alex Riberas’ Heart of Racing Aston Martin.
The Cadillac V-Series.R, driven by Earl Bamber and Jack Aitken, clinched the race victory, capitalizing on strategic pit stops. Action Express Racing secured a well-earned first-place finish while ensuring Aitken finished second in the championship standings.
The battle extended beyond the front; the #7 Porsche faced misfortunes, culminating in a 10th-place finish after contact with the wall. Meanwhile, the Aston Martin displayed competitive potential, achieving its best result in IMSA, along with the Lamborghini SC63 LMDh, which showcased strong performance before its unexpected exit from the program.
Despite the season’s challenges and missed opportunities, Porsche took home the IMSA Endurance Cup along with the manufacturer’s and team’s titles. As Campbell summarized: “We played the percentages and came out on top in the end.”

- Winner: Cadillac V-Series.R (Action Express Racing)
