Lamborghini Halts SC63 LMDh Program, Focuses on Future Projects

Lamborghini has officially announced a pause on its SC63 LMDh prototype’s participation in the IMSA SportsCar Championship for the upcoming season. The decision reflects a strategic realignment of the Italian manufacturer’s motorsport activities after discontinuing its involvement in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class.

Lamborghini previously operated the SC63 with Riley Motorsports in a one-car deployment, but plans for future IMSA engagements hinge on seeking an additional partner for sustainability. "We are still looking for opportunities to have a team that is interested," said Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s Chief Technology Officer. He emphasized the need for "financial balancing" as Lamborghini leads the current program, underscoring increasing resource demands and escalating costs.

The SC63 has seen limited success, with seventh-place finishes at the Sebring 12 Hours and Watkins Glen 6 Hours, along with a 10th-place finish at the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours. Its remaining schedule includes participation in the Indianapolis 6 Hours and Petit Le Mans in 2025.

Strategic Shift and Future Focus

The move away from IMSA follows Lamborghini’s withdrawal from WEC, where new regulations required fielding two cars in the Hypercar class, significantly raising costs. Mohr pointed out that Lamborghini, being smaller compared to other manufacturers in this space, had "perhaps underestimated" the expenses involved in developing the LMDh in collaboration with Ligier Automotive.

Looking ahead, Lamborghini plans to concentrate resources on the new Temerario GT3, set for customer release in 2026, and a one-make Super Trofeo version expected in 2027. Despite current setbacks, Lamborghini reiterated its long-term commitment to motorsport, describing it as a core component of the brand’s identity and signaled interest in evaluating future racing opportunities.

This strategic pause highlights the evolving landscape within professional sports car racing, as Lamborghini recalibrates its approach to align with its organizational capabilities and market conditions.
