Logan Sargeant Returns to Prototype Racing with PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports

September 2023 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Former Formula 1 driver Logan Sargeant is making a notable return to prototype racing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, joining PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports for the final two endurance events of the season. This decision comes six months after a surprising split from IDEC Sport Racing and the Hyundai Genesis team.

Sargeant, 24, will pilot the #52 Oreca 07-Gibson at the six-hour race at Indianapolis on September 21 and the ten-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on October 11. This move contradicts the official statement from IDEC Sport Racing in February, which indicated he would step away from racing to pursue other interests.

Recently, Sargeant became a client of Oliver Gavin’s management group, suggesting a structured return to racing. At PR1 Mathiasen, he will team up with former IndyCar driver Benjamin Pedersen and Bronze-rated driver Naveen Rao.

Sargeant expressed enthusiasm about his return: "I’m super excited to be jumping back into a car for the last two LMP2 races in IMSA… I’m eager to contribute to a successful couple of races for the team."

Team principal Bobby Oergel welcomed Sargeant’s addition, stating, "We are very excited that Logan is able to join us… I am sure Logan’s pace will be top-notch and everyone will work well together."

Sargeant’s motorsport credentials include a world karting title, podiums in FIA Formula 3, and a fourth-place finish in FIA Formula 2, culminating in a Formula 1 seat with Williams in 2023. He became the first American in 30 years to score a championship point at the U.S. Grand Prix but was ultimately replaced after the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix.

This return to prototype racing marks a critical chapter in Sargeant’s evolving career, with potential implications for his future in endurance racing.
