Kanaan Prepared as Backup for Larson in Indy 500
As Kyle Larson gears up for his pursuit of "The Double," participating in both the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 on May 25, preparations are in place should he require a substitute. Former Indy 500 champion Tony Kanaan, now team principal of Arrow McLaren, has conducted a refresher test in Larson’s No. 17 car to ensure readiness in case weather delays necessitate his participation.
Kanaan, a veteran of 23 Indy 500s, completed 30 laps during practice, consistently reaching speeds upwards of 215 mph. Despite the nostalgia of being back on the track, Kanaan emphasized his commitment to his role at Arrow McLaren.
"Driving an IndyCar again was a thrill, but I’ve moved on," he stated. "I enjoy my responsibilities with the team and have no plans to race again unless absolutely necessary."
During his test, Kanaan took the opportunity to familiarize himself with the current hybrid-engine setup, which has become a focal point of discussion for this year’s race. "I didn’t feel a significant change since my last run, but it was vital to assess our car’s performance," he remarked.
With Larson’s priority clearly on NASCAR commitments, the potential for a last-minute shift to the Indy 500 remains. "I’ll continue with team duties until needed," Kanaan added, noting the importance of fulfilling sponsor obligations.
As the motorsport community watches closely, Kanaan’s insights and experience could be invaluable should circumstances require it. However, for now, all eyes are on Larson and his pursuit of history.
