Kirkwood Faces Uphill Challenge in IndyCar Championship Race
August 2023, USA – Kyle Kirkwood’s promising start in the IndyCar Series took a downturn in July, impacting his championship aspirations as he faces the final stretch of the season. The Andretti Global driver secured two victories and a fourth-place finish in June, which positioned him second in the standings, just 93 points behind leader Alex Palou. However, a tumultuous July comprised of five races over four weekends saw Kirkwood struggling with a tire failure at Iowa Speedway and subsequent penalties at Laguna Seca, leading to some of his lowest finishes of the season.
As August begins, Kirkwood finds himself fourth in the championship, now 213 points adrift of Palou and effectively removed from title contention. He remarked to RACER, “Iowa and Laguna were kicks in the nuts… what I’m looking at here is the ability to claw back to third.” Currently, he trails Scott Dixon by just 15 points, which Kirkwood considers attainable with upcoming circuits like Portland and Milwaukee on the calendar.
Kirkwood is optimistic about securing a career-best championship standing in 2025, noting his trajectory of improvement over the past seasons: “I finished 22nd in my rookie year, then 11th, and then seventh last year. Progression is the biggest thing.”
This season marks Kirkwood’s first as Andretti’s top performer, stepping into a leadership role while navigating a challenging championship landscape. His teammate, Colton Herta, has experienced a stronger July with a series of top-four finishes, while Marcus Ericsson has faced difficulties. Nonetheless, Kirkwood believes in the growth of the Andretti team.
Reflecting on the season’s ups and downs, he stated, “We’ve been better at a lot of tracks than we were even a year ago… Even when things have gone wrong, we still have one car that’s right there.”
With three races remaining, Kirkwood’s focus remains on closing the gap to Dixon while maintaining his position against rising competitor Christian Lundgaard, laying the groundwork for a robust finish to the season.
