Palou Dominates Sonsio Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing showcased his dominance in the NTT IndyCar Series with a commanding victory at the Sonsio Grand Prix, marking his fourth win in five races this season. The race, held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course, witnessed Palou reclaim the lead on lap 58 after briefly trailing Graham Rahal, eventually finishing 5.484 seconds ahead of runner-up Pato O’Ward.

Palou’s victory continues his historic momentum, becoming the first IndyCar driver in over 60 years to achieve four wins in the opening five races of a season. Reflecting on his team’s performance, he stated, “I owe everything to the team. It’s unbelievable. Hopefully, we get to stay here (in victory lane) again in a couple of weeks for the biggest race of the year.”

O’Ward, who started eighth, executed a strategic tire strategy, finishing second, while Will Power of Team Penske rounded out the podium, moving from seventh to third using a similar approach. Both drivers began the race on alternate tires, making key in-race decisions that played to their advantage.

Race Highlights and Strategy

The race commenced with a yellow flag due to an MGU issue for sixth-place qualifier Josef Newgarden, who was subsequently forced to start from the back. The opening laps unfolded with a three-car incident involving Callum Ilott, while Colton Herta retired following contact that damaged his front wing.

Teams had to navigate a mandatory tire strategy that required them to utilize both primary and alternate tires. Most teams, including the top-three finishers, began and finished on alternate tires, employing primaries in the critical middle portions of the race. Notably, Scott McLaughlin finished fourth, with Scott Dixon battling from a 16th-place start to secure fifth.

Notable Incidents

The first caution since the St. Petersburg opener was triggered on lap 69 when David Malukas found himself off-course with mechanical issues. This incident marked a significant break in a streak of 408 green-flag laps.

Rahal, aiming to end a 128-race winless streak, found himself on the wrong side of strategy, finishing sixth after a problematic final pit stop. Other notable finishers included Marcus Armstrong, Kyle Kirkwood, Rinus VeeKay, and Felix Rosenqvist, completing the top ten.

With momentum firmly in his favor, Palou now sets his sights on the iconic Indianapolis 500, scheduled for May 24, following a weekend off for Mother’s Day. The racing community anticipates whether he can maintain his winning streak in the series’ most prestigious event.
