Andretti Global Announces Leadership Transition Ahead of 2024 IndyCar Season
As of January 1, Andretti Global’s IndyCar team will undergo a significant leadership change with Rob Edwards passing the reins to Ron Ruzewski, former Team Penske managing director. Edwards, who has led the IndyCar and Indy NXT programs since 2015, will shift to a new role as chief of performance across multiple racing platforms, including IndyCar, NASCAR, IMSA, and Formula E.
During Edwards’ tenure, the team secured 26 IndyCar victories, highlighted by two Indianapolis 500 wins in consecutive years: Alexander Rossi in 2016 and Takuma Sato in 2017. Additionally, Andretti claimed five Indy Lights championships under his guidance.
The timing of this transition presents challenges, as Ruzewski is bound by a non-compete agreement with Team Penske that restricts his involvement until January 1. Edwards expressed the complications of such a delayed handover, stating, “We’ve had September through December preparing for 2026, while being mindful that Ron is ultimately going to steer the ship.”
The transition comes amidst a tight timeline, with Ruzewski stepping into the role just under two months before the season opener on March 1. Edwards emphasized the importance of a thorough transition, mentioning that he would continue to support Ruzewski as they integrate their strategies and align their teams.
Both Edwards and Ruzewski share a history from Derrick Walker’s IndyCar team, which should facilitate collaboration during this adjustment period. Edwards expects the transition to extend through the season-including the opening event in St. Petersburg—and projected a gradual adaptation process for Ruzewski, emphasizing that “[he] won’t come in guns blazing.”
With driver Will Power also transitioning to Andretti, the new leadership faces a steep learning curve. They aim to blend established team dynamics with fresh strategies, maintaining a long-term perspective as they work towards improving performance in the competitive IndyCar landscape.
