Indy 500 Post-Race Inspection Results in Penalties for Three Teams

Following a rigorous post-race inspection of the 107th Indianapolis 500, the IndyCar Series has disqualified three entries due to violations of the technical regulations. The No. 27 and No. 28 Andretti Global Hondas, as well as the No. 90 PREMA Racing Chevy, were found to have breached the rulebook, resulting in significant alterations to the final standings.

Key Penalties and Adjusted Results

  • Marcus Ericsson: Originally finished 2nd, now classified 31st.
  • Kyle Kirkwood: Originally finished 6th, now classified 32nd.
  • Callum Ilott: Originally finished 12th, now classified 33rd.

According to IndyCar, the infractions involved unauthorized modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers and parts associated with the Andretti cars. The alterations were deemed to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, contravening Rule 14.1.3, which stipulates that all components must be used as supplied.

Specific Violations Detailed

The findings highlighted under Rule 9.3.1 concern "Improper Conduct," which pertains to any team’s engagement in unsportsmanlike or unsafe behavior detrimental to racing.

For the PREMA Racing Chevy, the violation stemmed from failure to comply with minimum endplate height specifications on the front wing, violating Rule 14.7.6.8. This infraction also falls under the conduct clauses that apply to all teams.

Additional Penalties Imposed

The affected teams will incur substantial financial repercussions, with each being fined $100,000. Furthermore, team and competition managers for these entries are suspended for one race and will miss the upcoming event in Detroit.

As stated by IndyCar, "Prize money and championship race points earned are commensurate with the final and official finishing positions."

This situation underscores the importance of compliance with technical regulations in motorsports, reaffirming the series’ commitment to fair competition.
