Luyendyk Advocates for Verstappen’s IndyCar Transition
Ari Luyendyk, the two-time Indy 500 champion, expressed his enthusiasm for seeing Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 champion, compete in the IndyCar Series. In an interview with The RACER Channel, Luyendyk praised Verstappen’s calm demeanor and racecraft, contrasting it with fellow driver Lando Norris’s more anxious communications during races.
Luyendyk highlighted Verstappen’s ability to multitask and maintain focus under pressure, attributing this skill to his extensive experience in karting and sim racing. "He can do so much at the same time… he just sees it – the whole picture – he’s got it in one nanosecond," said Luyendyk, underscoring Verstappen’s exceptional talent.
The former racing driver acknowledged Verstappen’s passion for all forms of motorsport and expressed a desire to see him in IndyCar, indicating potential crossover interest as Verstappen follows various racing categories, including NASCAR.
Despite experiencing performance issues with Red Bull’s RB21, Verstappen remains under contract with the team until the end of 2028. He has been linked to a potential move to Mercedes in 2026, but Verstappen has previously stated his intention to explore opportunities in different race formats, including GT3 sports cars.
As the motorsports community contemplates what the future holds for Verstappen, one thing is clear: his talents could translate effectively across various racing disciplines.
