Bill Pappas Exits IndyCar Amid Strategic Reorganization

Bill Pappas, Vice President of Competition and Race Engineering for IndyCar, has departed from the series without an official statement regarding the reasons for his exit. Pappas, a distinguished figure in motorsports with extensive experience in CART and the unified IndyCar Series, assumed his role with IndyCar’s engineering department in 2016, succeeding Will Phillips.

During his tenure, Pappas collaborated closely with key technical leaders, including Tino Belli, Darren Sansum, and Kevin ‘Rocket’ Blanch, contributing to significant engineering advancements. Notably, he was integral in the development of the UAK18 universal aero kit, the aeroscreen driver safety device, and the hybridization of the series’ drivetrain, which introduced critical component modifications aimed at enhancing performance and safety.

Furthermore, Pappas played a key role in tailoring technical packages for oval races, optimizing downforce, drag, power, and mechanical grip specific to each venue.

IndyCar is reportedly beginning the search for Pappas’s replacement while also planning to expand its engineering staff in anticipation of a new chassis and engine package set to debut in 2028.
