Ericsson’s IndyCar Future Secure Despite Tough Season
Marcus Ericsson is experiencing the toughest season of his IndyCar career, raising questions about his future with Andretti Global. However, Team COO Rob Edwards has reaffirmed the team’s commitment to the 2022 Indianapolis 500 champion.
Ericsson, who signed a three-year contract with Andretti starting in 2024, is confirmed to remain in the No. 28 Honda for the upcoming season. Edwards stated, “Nothing’s changed. He is under contract for next year… It’ll go away when we can get more results with the 28 car.”
In an effort to revitalize Ericsson’s season, Andretti appointed Dave Seyffert as race engineer in July. Under Seyffert’s leadership, Ericsson achieved his season-best finish of fifth place at Toronto. However, setbacks—including a tire failure and crash at Iowa, as well as a solo incident at Laguna Seca—have hindered his performance, leading to finishes of 22nd and 25th in those respective events.
Edwards acknowledged that while the circumstances around Ericsson might appear more favorable without recent struggles, he believes in the potential of their revised program. “It’s certainly given a fresh direction and a positive direction… It’s a results business, and they’ve got to put some results on the board,” he remarked, expressing optimism as they prepare for the final three races of the season.
