Tribute to Marlyne Sexton: A Vital Force for AJ Foyt Racing
The motorsports community mourns the passing of Marlyne Sexton, a pivotal figure for AJ Foyt Racing, who died last week at 86. Her long-standing relationship with the Foyt family transformed from friendship into critical support for the beleaguered racing team.
Sexton, alongside her late husband Joe, became an associate sponsor for AJ Foyt Racing’s Indy 500 entry in 2015. Following financial troubles when the team’s primary sponsor failed to meet obligations in 2021-22, Sexton Properties stepped up, transitioning from a secondary to full-title sponsorship on the No. 14 Chevy.
Marlyne’s business acumen facilitated this crucial support during a time of financial instability. With her name prominently displayed on the car, it was evident who played a key role in assuring the team’s participation in the 2023 season.
"She was a beautiful woman and a wonderful sponsor," said team owner A.J. Foyt, recalling his deep friendship with the Sextons. "I will really miss her."
Team president Larry Foyt echoed these sentiments, stating, "Marlyne’s strength and positive influence have had a significant impact on our recent successes. I will miss our talks about the races, but her teachings and impact will be remembered for the rest of my life."
Her influence extended beyond racing. Sexton was a noted benefactor for the arts and charities and served on the board of the White House Historical Association, demonstrating her commitment to community.
In recognition of her legacy, Santino Ferrucci’s No. 14 Sexton Properties Chevy will feature a tribute livery at this weekend’s IndyCar event at Road America. "Marlyne really believed in me and the team," Ferrucci remarked. "She treated me like family."
With the team now in a technical alliance with Team Penske, AJ Foyt Racing has improved significantly, now contending for top-10 finishes. Marlyne Sexton’s advocacy and support will not soon be forgotten as the team looks ahead.
