Honda’s Future in IndyCar: Uncertainty Ahead of New Formula

Milwaukee, WI – As the IndyCar Series progresses, questions loom over Honda’s commitment beyond its current contract, set to expire at the end of 2026. Amidst a recent Manufacturers’ Championship press conference at the Milwaukee Mile, Honda Racing Corporation US president David Salters evaded specific inquiries regarding an extension.

While affirming Honda’s longstanding affinity for IndyCar—highlighting a successful 30-year relationship and a strong performance in the current season—Salters maintained a reserved stance on future negotiations. “We love IndyCar. We love the racing,” he stated but clarified, “We don’t talk about our private businesses.”

Adding to the complexity, IndyCar plans to implement a new chassis and engine formula in 2028, necessitating a reliable engine supply in 2027. The series requires commitments from its manufacturers, which currently include Honda and Chevrolet, to ensure the grid remains competitive during this transitional year.

Both Honda and Chevrolet are contemplating future directions, with speculation peaking around Honda’s potential move to NASCAR. A public commitment from either manufacturer will be crucial for sustaining engine supply as the series prepares for its next significant evolution.
