Simon Pagenaud’s Critical Role in Cadillac F1 Development

Simon Pagenaud, the 2016 IndyCar Series champion and 2019 Indianapolis 500 winner, has been pivotal in the evolution of General Motors’ motorsports initiatives, particularly as a development driver for the Cadillac Formula 1 program and the Team Chevy IndyCar Series.

Over the past year, Pagenaud has engaged extensively with GM’s Charlotte Technical Center, contributing both to the optimization of chassis and engine tuning for the IndyCar season and to the advancement of Cadillac’s upcoming F1 car, set to debut in 2026.

While partnering with Team Chevy’s engineers, Pagenaud transitioned between projects, dedicating significant hours in the driver-in-the-loop (DIL) simulator for Cadillac, effectively shaping the design and performance of the team’s future F1 contender. His work included testing hundreds of virtual components and setups, aiding engineers in establishing an optimal vehicle configuration.

Pagenaud underscored his enthusiasm for the technical aspects of racing, stating, “Optimizing the technical side of a car and managing relationships with the people in the factory has been my passion… This work gives me a feeling of being useful and bringing in my expertise.”

Despite not competing since a serious accident in mid-2023—a crash that resulted from a brake failure—Pagenaud has redirected his technical expertise to enhance his contributions to GM. Describing his simulator work, he added, “My role and my goal are to make the simulator as close to reality as possible.”

Cadillac F1 Team Principal Graeme Lowdon praised Pagenaud’s involvement, highlighting its significance in building the team’s foundation. “Our work in the simulator is critical… Simon has brought experience and energy to the process and has helped us hugely,” Lowdon remarked.

As Cadillac prepares for its entrance into Formula 1, Pagenaud’s insights and experience are invaluable, reinforcing the strategic framework necessary for competitive performance.
