IndyCar Responds to Controversial DHS Social Media Post

Speedway, Indiana – The IndyCar Series has officially distanced itself from a recent social media post by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that utilized an image of a Dallara DW12 IndyCar for a detention program announcement. The post features a white No. 5 IndyCar, famously associated with popular driver Pato O’Ward, placed against a backdrop of a prison, under the caption "Speedway Slammer."

The nickname references Camp Atterbury, a federal installation located approximately 40 miles south of Speedway, which will accommodate up to 1,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees. This announcement has raised concerns, prompting IndyCar to issue a statement clarifying their stance.

“We were unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of today’s announcement,” the series stated. “Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter.”

The incident highlights the complexities arising from the intersection of sports and political imagery, particularly as motorsport remains a significant cultural touchstone in the region.
