Practice Insights and Driver Perspectives
During Friday’s practice, driver performance varied with championship leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing securing a second-place finish. He highlighted the significant differences between tire compounds, stating, “It’s going to make the race very interesting… better for the alternates or better for the primaries? You never know.”
AJ Foyt Racing’s David Malukas, finishing sixth, acknowledged the challenge ahead. “From a deg perspective, I think it’s still alternate-preferred,” he remarked, noting they would rely on past data to inform their strategy.
Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward, who placed ninth, expressed concerns over the primaries, stating, “I just can’t get the primaries to activate… the alternates seem to work better for me.”
Strategic Implications
With no on-track activity on Sunday before the race, teams will have to make educated guesses about tire pressures and suspension settings. Palou and O’Ward, two title contenders, are positioned on opposite ends of the spectrum regarding their confidence in tire performance.
Palou summarized the competitive atmosphere: “It’s tough to get the lap time; you feel like you need to make a lot of work… but I like it that way.”
