IndyCar Implements Strategy Changes Ahead of Indianapolis
Long Beach, CA – The IndyCar Series is set to adjust its strategy requirements for the upcoming Sonsio Grand Prix on May 10 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in an effort to enhance race excitement and fan engagement. Following the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, where race strategies proved somewhat predictable, officials are mandating new tire use guidelines.
Starting with the Sonsio Grand Prix, teams will now be required to utilize two sets of alternate (red sidewall) tires and two sets of primary tires during the race. This adjustment increases the minimum usage of each tire compound, which could potentially lead to a shift from a one-stop strategy to a more complex three-stop strategy for drivers.
IndyCar President Doug Boles emphasized the continuous efforts to refine the series’ competitive landscape, stating, “We are always looking for ways to improve an already extraordinary on-track product.” The new requirements aim to boost strategic options, particularly between road and street courses, as drivers adapt to higher tire degradation levels influenced by the added weight of hybrid systems.
Additionally, practice time has been shortened; Practice 2 on the IMS road course will now offer a maximum of 35 minutes of guaranteed green flag time, down from the previous 45 minutes.
In another development, Firestone is introducing a new primary tire compound for use during the Children’s of Alabama Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park, which is expected to provide greater durability but with a decrease in grip.
Fans can track tire strategies and usage in real-time throughout the weekend events via Firestone’s live timing feature.
As the IndyCar series approaches the crucial "Month of May," these strategic changes underscore a commitment to delivering an exhilarating race experience.
