Newgarden Dominates Pit Stop Challenge, Prepares for Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS – Josef Newgarden and his No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet claimed victory in the Pit Stop Challenge, securing a $50,000 prize and the coveted title. This marks the first time since 2007 that two Team Penske cars reached the finals, with Newgarden facing off against teammate Will Power in an all-Penske showdown.
In the semifinals, Newgarden bested Pato O’Ward from Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, while Power’s team defeated Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing.
In the final, Newgarden set the pace with a 10.45-second pit stop, but Power’s crew responded with a 10.5-second effort in the second attempt. Ultimately, Newgarden’s team clinched the title with a rapid 10.263-second final round.
“They are the unsung heroes of this race,” Newgarden expressed to IndyCar on FOX. "They work on these cars all day and night, and it’s crucial for our success at the Indy 500."
Both Newgarden and Power will start at the back of the field, 32nd and 33rd respectively, following a controversy regarding the Penske attenuator. This incident resulted in a significant shakeup within the organization, including the departure of three top executives.
As they brace for the Indy 500, the importance of their fast pit crews cannot be overstated. Speed during pit stops will be critical as they aim to navigate through the competitive field on race day.
