Kirkwood Claims Thrilling Victory Under the Lights at WWTR

Madison, IL—Kyle Kirkwood delivered an electrifying performance at World Wide Technology Raceway, winning the inaugural primetime IndyCar race under the lights. The race, comprising 260 laps on the 1.25-mile oval, showcased intense competition and strategic prowess, culminating in Kirkwood’s triumph in the No. 27 Honda.

After a decisive final restart on lap 208, Kirkwood managed to fend off challenges from Pato O’Ward, who finished second in the No. 5 Chevy, and Christian Rasmussen, who made a remarkable charge from 25th to secure third in the No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevy.

“The starts and the restarts were big,” Kirkwood commented post-race. “We were not too happy with the car yesterday, but with the help from my teammates, we turned it around. As it got dark and cooler, the Honda just came alive.”

This victory marks Kirkwood’s third of the season, solidifying his place among the series’ elite, alongside championship leader Alex Palou, who has five wins this year.

O’Ward, who led for eight laps, attributed his runner-up finish to a delay caused by teammate Nolan Siegel on the final restart. “I hope it was an amazing show for all you fans,” he said, noting the excitement of night racing.

Rasmussen, celebrated for his aggressive driving style, notably completed 62 passes—more than any other driver—highlighting his skill and determination. “We started 25th in the race, but way to turn it around for ECR,” he stated.

The race unfolded dramatically, particularly for heavy hitters Team Chevy. Polesitter Will Power crashed out due to a tire failure, with Jose Newgarden involved in a significant collision. Scott McLaughlin, the last hope for Team Penske, exited with a suspected suspension failure—compounding Chevy’s misfortunes.

David Malukas exhibited early speed but fell victim to a drive-through penalty after an illegal pit exit. Ultimately, the combination of strategic pit stops and timely cautions enabled Kirkwood’s ascent to the lead, culminating in a richly deserved victory.

With this result, Kirkwood continues Honda’s recent winning momentum, extending its streak to nine consecutive races, dating back to the previous season.
