Kirkwood Capitalizes on Palou’s Misfortune at Detroit Grand Prix
In a dramatic turn of events at the Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday, Alex Palou’s unbeaten season took a significant hit when David Malukas collided with him, sending the No. 10 Honda into the tire barrier on lap 72. This incident not only marked Palou’s first DNF of the season but also the first since July 2024, affecting his pursuit of the championship.
Kyle Kirkwood, who entered the race only 150 points behind Palou, immediately recognized the opportunity presented by the championship leader’s misfortune. "I shouldn’t be smiling thinking that, but I knew that he crashed, and I knew that we needed to capitalize on some points today," Kirkwood stated after securing victory.
Kirkwood’s win propelled him from fifth to third in the IndyCar standings, now 102 points adrift of Palou. “Super important,” he remarked on the victory. “We’ve got to keep doing it… it puts us back in a position where you feel like you might be able to get that back.”
Kirkwood’s previous sixth-place finish at the Indy 500 was later nullified due to post-race technical inspections, further escalating the stakes for him in Detroit. With the series set to move to the oval at World Wide Technology Raceway and then road courses at Road America and Mid-Ohio, Kirkwood is aware of Palou’s strengths but remains optimistic. “We’ve had a lot of success there in previous years… we can’t let him win any more races.”
The championship landscape has shifted, but the battle remains fierce as Kirkwood aims to close the gap on Palou ahead of upcoming races, indicating that the season’s title fight is far from decided. As the IndyCar series continues, all eyes will be on both drivers and their strategies in the weeks to come.
