INDYCAR: Palou Secures Third Consecutive Win at Indianapolis Grand Prix, Extends Championship Lead
Alex Palou and Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) continued their dominant performance in the 2025 INDYCAR season, achieving their third consecutive victory at the Indianapolis Grand Prix. With this win, Palou has claimed four victories out of the first five races, boosting his championship lead from 60 to 97 points.
“I cannot describe the amazing season we’ve had so far. I owe everything to the team and everyone working behind the scenes to make me look so fast,” said Palou post-race.
The race featured a competitive start, with Graham Rahal, who commenced from second position, taking the lead on the first lap. He maintained control for 48 laps, appearing poised for his first win in nearly eight years. However, a late caution triggered by an engine issue for David Malukas set the stage for a thrilling finish.
On the restart, Palou executed a well-timed pass on Rahal, showcasing a strategic tire usage plan that prioritized performance in the final stages. Despite Rahal’s early dominance, his decision to not save his best tires for the end proved detrimental, as he ultimately finished sixth.
Pato O’Ward, driving for Arrow McLaren, made a strong effort to challenge Palou but settled for second, finishing 5.4 seconds behind. Will Power of Team Penske rounded out the podium in third, benefitting from a well-timed pit stop that allowed him to leapfrog his teammate Scott McLaughlin.
“This is a great points day,” O’Ward noted. “We need to do something to stop the No. 10 car. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it.”
Significant driver movements were noted throughout the field, including Scott Dixon’s impressive rise from 16th to fifth, and Marcus Armstrong’s climb from 15th to seventh. Kyle Kirkwood also made a notable 13-place gain, finishing eighth after starting in 21st.
Race Details:
- Key Moment: The differing tire strategies between Palou and Rahal were pivotal. Palou capitalized on fresh tire performance late in the race, contrasting Rahal’s slower closing strategy.
- Conditions: The race took place under warm 80-degree conditions, conducive to competitive racing.
Palou’s strategic acumen and the CGR team’s execution have set a formidable pace as they head into the Indianapolis 500, with practice set to commence shortly.
