Alex Palou Secures Historic Championship at Portland
Portland International Raceway—Alex Palou solidified his status as a dominant force in IndyCar racing by clinching his fourth championship at the recent Portland Grand Prix. The No. 10 Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) driver has now achieved an impressive feat of winning three consecutive championships, underscoring a legacy of excellence with eight victories this season.
Under the strategic leadership of team manager Barry Wanser, race engineer Julian Robertson, and crew chief Ricky Davis, Palou’s triumph adds to CGR’s storied history of 17 championships, equaling Team Penske’s record. Notably, CGR has garnered 13 titles since the year 2000, showcasing an unparalleled consistency.
Palou, whose rise has been meteoric, needs just 96 races to reach this accolade, positioning him among an elite group of only four drivers to win three consecutive titles. He follows the path of legends like Ted Horn and Dario Franchitti, with Sebastien Bourdais holding the record for four straight championships.
"I have to thank my entire team; this has been a collaborative effort,” said Palou, reflecting on the season. “Leading the standings for 413 consecutive days is a testament to our hard work and preparation."
The 2025 season saw Palou open with an extraordinary performance, winning five of the first six races, including his first Indianapolis 500 victory. By Portland, he had developed a commanding lead of 131 points, emphasizing the level of his dominance.
The race itself featured a challenging moment for rival Pato O’Ward, who faced an electrical failure that forced him to finish 25th, while Palou secured a third-place finish. This ensured Palou’s championship was finalized with one race remaining in the season.
As he celebrates this latest achievement, Palou not only enhances his own legacy but further cements Ganassi’s position as a powerhouse team in IndyCar history.
