Will Power’s Climb: A Championship Recovery in Full Swing
Will Power’s 2023 season faced a daunting start, marred by a crash incident at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix that left him in 26th place. However, the Australian driver has staged a remarkable comeback, showcasing resilience and skill in the No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet.
Power’s rebound began at The Thermal Club, where he advanced from 21st to sixth place. He continued this upward trajectory with consistent performances: securing fifth place at both Long Beach and Barber Motorsports Park, followed by a podium finish with a third at the Indianapolis Grand Prix.
These results have transformed his championship outlook as he now sits seventh in the standings, just nine points behind teammate Scott McLaughlin, who stands fifth. This significant recovery positions Power to potentially erase the St. Petersburg deficit during the critical month ahead.
Reflecting on his performance, Power acknowledged the dominance of Alex Palou, the driver currently winning successive races. "I would tell you we have had a fantastic last four races if one guy wasn’t winning them all,” he noted. Looking ahead to the Indianapolis 500, Power expressed confidence in the Chevy’s capabilities. “We had very good strategy and car pace today. Unfortunately, no passing for me at this track. I’m excited to get on the oval and see how the car feels,” he stated, hinting at promising developments from recent testing.
As the series heads into the marquee event of the Indy 500, Power’s momentum could prove pivotal in the race for the championship.
