Mick Schumacher Set for 2026 IndyCar Season with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) is poised to integrate Mick Schumacher into its third entry for the 2026 IndyCar Series. The German driver, stepping into the No. 47 Honda, will face the challenge of mastering numerous tracks and racing on ovals—skills crucial for securing a competitive edge in the 17-race championship.
RLL President Jay Frye provided insights into the team’s testing strategy, emphasizing a structured approach: “We’re looking at a four, two, and one testing schedule—four ovals, two road courses, and one street course, specifically Sebring on the short course.” Preparations are underway to finalize testing dates ahead of the pivotal open test in Phoenix scheduled for February.
Schumacher’s most critical focus will be his oval racing proficiency. To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, Frye stated, “It will be all hands on deck to help and assist him.” The team anticipates utilizing external resources and a simulator to enhance his driving skills before the scheduled open test.
Logistical challenges are present, particularly regarding January testing locations. Frye noted, “There’s only so many places from an oval perspective that you can go that’s warm enough… but we can’t go to Phoenix due to testing regulations.” An alternative oval test site is being explored to optimize Schumacher’s preparation.
The partnership between RLL and Schumacher is a one-year deal with options for extension. With approximately six weeks until testing begins, RLL is finalizing its mechanical and engineering support team for Schumacher. Frye remarked on the team’s enthusiasm, stating, “For the last month, everyone has been asking if we’ve got his deal done yet… This is going to be an A-plus effort with a really great team.”
As Schumacher gears up for 2026, RLL aims to create a robust infrastructure around him, ensuring he has every advantage as he transitions into the competitive world of IndyCar racing.
