Prema Racing’s Robert Shwartzman Claims Historic Pole at 109th Indy 500

Indianapolis, IN – In a stunning turnaround at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Prema Racing’s Robert Shwartzman has secured pole position for the 109th running of the Indy 500, marking a significant achievement for both the rookie driver and the fledgling team. This victory is particularly noteworthy, as Shwartzman becomes the first rookie to capture the pole in 42 years.

Shwartzman, a 25-year-old from Israel, recorded a blistering lap at 232.478 mph during the Fast 6 qualifying round, putting him at the front of the grid alongside two-time Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato and Pato O’Ward, who claimed second and third positions, respectively.

“I honestly can’t believe it. I was closing my eyes, thinking this can’t be true,” said Shwartzman after the qualifying session. “The car felt amazing. I can’t thank Prema and Chevy enough. It’s unbelievable to be in this position for my first oval race.”

Qualifying Highlights

  • Front Row: Robert Shwartzman (Pole), Takuma Sato (Second), Pato O’Ward (Third).
  • Second Row: Scott Dixon, Felix Rosenqvist, and Alex Palou.
  • Starting Positions: David Malukas will start seventh, Christian Lundgaard eighth, and the 2022 Indy 500 champion Marcus Ericsson ninth. Scott McLaughlin, who suffered a heavy crash in practice, will start tenth.

Fast 12 Drama

The qualifying session featured unexpected drama as only nine drivers participated in the Fast 12 due to complications for Team Penske’s trio. McLaughlin’s crash destroyed his No. 3 Chevrolet, while both Josef Newgarden’s and Will Power’s cars faced disqualification from the qualifying rounds due to issues with their rear attenuators. Consequently, they were unable to make a qualifying run for pole.

As the battle for the final transfer spot into the Fast 6 unfolded, championship leader Alex Palou surpassed David Malukas, securing his place among the top contenders.

This year’s Indy 500 will see a remarkable mix of experience and emerging talent from both established and new teams, setting the stage for an exciting race on the iconic Brickyard.
