Mick Schumacher Completes First IndyCar Test with Promising Results

Mick Schumacher, the former Haas F1 driver, made his IndyCar debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.4-mile road course, clocking 18 laps in the No. 75 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda. Despite a timing system malfunction that hampered session tracking, Schumacher’s best unofficial lap of 1m11.78s positioned him third among the seven participants, trailing only Alexander Rossi from Ed Carpenter Racing (1m11.50s) and reigning Indy NXT champion Dennis Hauger (1m11.69s).

The test occurred under challenging circumstances, as the malfunction limited lap times until late morning. Nonetheless, Schumacher demonstrated adaptability and confidence while acclimating to the Dallara DW12-Honda, having sought this IndyCar opportunity to evaluate a potential career transition.

“It’s always important to get into a car,” Schumacher stated. “The team has been great in preparing me… it gives you the full picture of what it would be like to race here.”

Leading up to the test, Schumacher engaged in extensive preparation, including a day on Honda’s driver-in-the-loop simulator and technical sessions at RLL’s facility. Reflecting on the absence of power steering, he remarked on the car’s maneuverability, stating, “I found it actually lighter than expected… the car is fun to drive.”

To accommodate the test, RLL secured resources from Honda Racing Corporation, providing an extensive engineering workforce, including technical director Todd Malloy and race engineer Yves Touron. Notably, co-owner David Letterman attended the session, a rarity for a test day.

While discussions regarding Schumacher’s future in IndyCar have commenced, he remains noncommittal. “IndyCar has to be considered seriously… it’s a great place to be considered for,” he noted, leaving the door open for future possibilities following the successful test.
