Scott McLaughlin Involved in High-Speed Crash at Indy 500 Practice
Scott McLaughlin experienced a dramatic crash during the Fast 12 practice session for the Indy 500, marking the third instance in just three days of drivers going airborne. The incident occurred after McLaughlin set the fastest time of the session at 233.553 mph. While navigating Turn 2, he lost control of the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet, impacting the outside wall before launching into the air and landing back on its wheels.
The collision resulted in significant damage, with the left-rear wheel being completely sheared off and the right-rear catching the track upon landing. Recovery efforts commenced immediately, as a visible gouge was noted on the racing line, necessitating repairs to both the track and the SAFER Barrier, which also sustained damage during the incident. Consequently, the crash led to a 30-minute stoppage in the one-hour practice session.
After exiting the infield care center, McLaughlin expressed relief at escaping serious injury but was visibly upset over the damage to his car. “I’m really, really sorry for everyone at Team Penske… It was talking to me, and I should have backed out," he stated. He acknowledged the risks involved at high speeds, reflecting on the value of safety measures provided by IndyCar.
Due to the crash, McLaughlin will not participate in Fast 12 qualifying, resulting in a provisional starting position of 12th for the Indy 500. This incident follows similar airborne crashes involving Kyffin Simpson and Colton Herta in recent sessions, underscoring the high stakes and unpredictability of this year’s event.
As preparations continue for the upcoming race, Team Penske will look to regroup and ensure McLaughlin’s car is ready for competition.
